Basic - Music Production and Composition Course (R4000)

8 x 1 on 1 classes with a qualified and experienced lecturer

2 hour classes (45 mins lesson; 1 hour practical exercise; 15 mins assessment)

Exercise and theory notes included

All ages welcome, no matric certificate required

Course structure

Class 1- Introduction to music production. Meet the software (FL Studio, Cubase, Ableton)
Class 2- Learn about bars and beats, and compose a pattern using a set of drum sounds
Class 3- Learn about notes and scales, how to find their key and use them as chords in music
Class 4- Using chords to add bass and other melodic elements to your song
Class 5- Gain staging: Using mixing tricks to achieve a basic balance with your instruments
Class 6- Software shortcuts and advanced functions
Class 7- Arrangement of music into a song, eg. from intro to verse, chorus to bridge etc
Class 8- Final task and assessment: Show us what you’ve learnt.

Intermediate - Sound Sensitivity Course (R5000)

10 x 1 on 1 classes with a qualified and experienced lecturer

2 hour classes (45 mins lesson; 1 hour practical exercise; 15 mins assessment)

All ages welcome, no matric certificate required

Course structure

Class 1- Revision of beat production and composition, decide on your genre
Class 2- Introduction to the 3D concept of mixing (Gain/volume, equalization and panning)
Class 3- Equalization: learn about frequency, application of EQ tools and parameters
Class 4- Recording vocals: Lead, backings and chants etc
Class 5- Compression: Understanding and controlling transients and dynamic range in music
Class 6- Advanced effects: Reverb, delay, distortion, side-chaining etc
Class 7- Automation
Class 8- Ear training exercises and reference tricks
Class 9- Using midi equipment for programming music and editing
Class 10- Final task and assessment: Show us what you’ve learnt.
- Includes 4 hours of extra practical time

Advanced - Mixing and Mastering Course (R6000)

10 x 1 on 1 classes with a qualified and experienced lecturer

2 hour classes (45 mins lesson; 1 hour practical exercise; 15 mins assessment)

All ages welcome, no matric certificate required

Course structure

Class 1- Introduction to mixing and mastering, listening and choosing reference tracks
Class 2- Prepping the mix: Prioritizing tracks and channels for mixing
Class 3- Mixing drums and percussions
Class 4- Mixing vocals: Lead, backings, choir, chants etc.
Class 5- Mixing pianos, keyboards, pads, strings, etc. collectively
Class 6- Stereo field: Advanced panning and stereo shaping techniques
Class 7- Introduction to Mastering
Class 8- Multiband Compression
Class 9- Master channel signal chain
Class 10- Final task and assessment: Show us what you’ve learnt.
- Includes 4 hours of extra practical time
